Periodontics & Dental Health FAQs

What is a periodontist, and how is it different from a general dentist?

A periodontist is a dental specialist who has completed additional years of training beyond dental school, focusing specifically on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease, and the placement of dental implants. While a general dentist handles overall oral health, a periodontist provides specialized care for the supporting structures of your teeth (gums and bone).

What types of gum disease do you treat?

We treat all stages of gum disease, from mild gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) to advanced periodontitis (which involves bone loss). Treatment options vary based on the severity and may include deep cleanings (scaling and root planing), gum surgery, or laser therapies.

When would I need a tissue graft?

A tissue graft is recommended when you have receding gums, which can expose tooth roots, leading to sensitivity, increased risk of decay, and an aesthetic concern. We can use tissue from the roof of your mouth or a donor source to cover the exposed roots and restore a healthy gumline.
